China Earthquake Update
/ Post by Pandas International
A strong earthquake struck China’s Sichuan province Saturday morning. The earthquake’s epicenter was about 80 miles southwest of the provincial capital of Chengdu, in Lushan county near the city of Ya’an – near the location of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda and the Bifengxia (BFX) Panda Base.
We are relieved to report that the staff and pandas at BFX are OK. There was some damage to walls, some broken glass, and the base was without water or power for a short time. The road up to BFX was damaged so many keepers are having to walk part of the way up to the base. The pandas were scared, especially due to aftershocks, but they seemed to calm quickly.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those in China.
